3 Tips To Have A Garbage Disposal That Functions The Way It's Supposed To

Fall is upon us, and the chances are you will be spending more time indoors, due to the weather Plumbing Tech cooling down. This also means you will likely be using your garbage disposal more often, and this is why you should know three ways to help you have a better functioning garbage disposal this Fall season. The three tips we want to provide you are:

Know What Not To Put In Your Garbage Disposal

Fall time is when the weather starts to cool down and this is when people enjoy drinking hot drinks, and this includes tea. You might be tempted to put your tea bags down the disposal, but you should avoid doing this.

Asides from tea bags, make sure you don't put anything stringy and/or starchy down it, and this includes things such as rice, pasta and celery. The last thing you want to do is to clog your drain pipes or cause issues with your garbage disposal's blades.

Properly Clean Your Disposal

The chances are that you probably don't clean your garbage disposal that much, and you might have never actually properly cleaned your disposal. Well, we recommend that you take the time to do it this year. Fall is a good time to clean your garbage disposal.

All you have to do is take a cup of vinegar (the white distilled type) and pour it into the disposal. Allow it to sit there for a good hour, and then you can flush it out by running hot water. You don't need to do this all the time, as once or twice per year is good enough, so make sure you clean it this year.

Run The Cold Water

We also recommend that before you use the garbage disposal, you should run the cold water. Do this during and after using it, because there may be some debris stuck in the plumbing system, and running cold water before, during and after using your garbage disposal should help flush it out. The last thing you want is to have to deal with a major clog in your plumbing system, so we strongly recommend you run the cold water while using your disposal, before and after using it.

If you have issues with your garbage disposal this Fall season, and you cannot figure out what is wrong, then give us a call. We will be more than happy to help you out.
