Protect Your Family From the Cold with This Winter Checklist

The days are getting shorter and colder here in Temecula, CA, which can mean only one thing: winter is on its way very soon. As the temperature drops, avoid seeing your heating bills climb by taking steps now to protect your family and your home from the harsh winter elements.

A little time spent now can help save money and keep you warm in the season ahead. These should be the top items on your winter checklist.

Insulate Your HomeScarf on a home

If your home is poorly insulated it will not only be uncomfortably cold, you will have high heating bills because you are wasting energy.

Start outside your home and look for cracks and open areas where cold air can seep in, and costly warm air can seep out.

Check seals around windows and doors; apply weather stripping and caulking as needed. If any windowpanes are cracked, replace them promptly.

To level gaps between doorways and the ground, raise walkways and/or entryways with weather stripping. Do you have any plumbing fixtures or conduits outside? What about vents? Make sure that seals are tight.

Do you have a wood-burning fireplace? It’s worthwhile to install a chimney pillow this season to keep warm air from floating up the flue, which can leak air even when it is closed.

Your Smoke DetectorsThumbs up

Get in the habit of testing your smoke detectors twice a year (ideally in late spring and late fall). Test that they are working and replace the batteries.

Check your carbon monoxide detectors as well. They can be especially important as you turn the heat and fireplaces on. It’s an essential safety measure.

Ventilate Your Home

A well-ventilated home is important for a few reasons. First, a dry home costs less to heat. When moisture builds up, you can also suffer structural damage. If you suffer from asthma or allergies, you don’t want mold growth to become a problem either.

This is why a whole-home ventilation system is worthwhile. At the very least, keep fans running even in the winter in various places throughout your home to ensure quality air flow.

De-Icing SaltFrozen Pipe

An icy walkway, driveway, and even plumbing system can be treacherous with even a thin layer of ice.

Reduce the possibility of injury by keeping on top of that ice with a generous distribution of de-icing salt.

Stock up for the winter at once and that way you won’t run out when you need it the most.
